I remember this scene often, though only seeing it once. In the sitcom Strangers With Candy, where Jerri Blank offers this quip in disgust: “Ew, bring a book.” The dramatic context was that whatever in-person event she was being canoodled into attending was going to be boring, and therefore a book would act as a source of engaging entertainment. I’ve always wanted to use this phrase in the same way, but have never gotten an appropriate opportunity to do so. Until now.
